Hope Memorial Trust Braithwaite Centre

Memorial Trust Braithwaite Centre

Not many state schools, even less so those from Inner London, can claim to have unlimited access to an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Lake District, such as the Braithwaite Centre.

The Hope Memorial Trust, which runs the centre, was established by Arthur Hope, a former Headteacher of The John Roan School from the 1920s. He wanted to give our capital’s young people the opportunity to experience the beauty beyond their urban environment.

Set within 40 acres of land, the centre acts as the perfect base for our students to access a wide variety of pursuits they may otherwise never experience, embrace the beauty of our spectacular countryside and be challenged and inspired by the bountiful nature of outdoor life. Activities that students can enjoy include:

  • Rock climbing

  • Hill walking

  • Orienteering

  • Nature rambles

  • Canoeing

  • Swimming

  • Ghyll scrambling

Students who have visited always talk about the lasting impression that their trip will have on them:

I can’t believe how lucky we are to come here. It’s shown me what life outside London can look like, and I’ve learnt so many valuable skills that I’m going to use when I get back to school.

Arthur Herbert Hope was a Headteacher at the Roan in the early 1920’s. He bought land in the Lake District to enable pupils to camp and enjoy the beauty of the area. He died intestate and a small group of parents and teachers bought the land from his estate and formed the Hope Memorial Trust so that his idea could continue. Now nearly 100 years later the Hope Memorial Camp sits on that land in a stunning location that even has its own hill.

The Trust is run as a charity and the residential centre, just outside the village of Braithwaite, near Keswick, is rented out to schools, youth groups and community organisations from across the country. The income generated from these lettings helps cover the cost of maintaining the building (and 38 acres of land), and allows costs for visiting Roan pupils to be subsidised.

The Trustees are a group of people who are connected to the school in some way (teachers and ex teachers, parents, and ex pupils) The Trustees are very proud of the camp and endeavour to make it safe and comfortable for everyone. Most of the pupils who have stayed at the camp say that they will remember the experience for the rest of their lives.

The Trust has been generously supported by the JR Foundation and former pupils.
