The John Roan Foundation

John Roan died in 1644 and bequeathed his estate to educate the town-born children of Greenwich. Nearly 400 years later his original bequest has grown so the John Roan Foundation owns not only the Maze Hill school site and school's playing fields in Kidbrooke Park Road, but also a property portfolio in Greenwich.

The rental income from the property portfolio provides a significant yearly income which the Trustees apply in line with John Roan's original bequest and is used to pay for educational purposes and projects at The John Roan School which fall outside what the State would normally fund.  This includes:

  • The opportunity for every student to learn to play a musical instrument free of charge
  • Heavily subsidising the cost of trips to Braithwaite & Stubbers Outdoor Activity Centre to allow every student to be able to go
  • Prizes & awards such as the Roan Exhibition. First awarded in 1882, it is awarded every year to the boy and girl who have achieved the highest results in their A levels. It is a bursary of £1000 paid for 3 years to help them through their choice of further education.
  • Improvements to our playing fields & resurfacing the sports pitch
  • Running costs for the school's minibuses
  • Subsidising the John Roan School Basketball Academy and Charlton Athletic Football Coaching Programme
  • New cameras for A Level Photography
  • Funding places at the Youth Science Festival
  • Funding uniform grants for students, including two refugees from Ukraine

In addition, the Foundation’s funding gives the students at John Roan a unique experience to widen their horizons in being able to experience a variety of extracurricular activities. Every member of staff can apply for funding for activities and equipment which means that the children can benefit from the inventive and creative ideas of any teacher in the school.
